OUR PROJECTS

Thermal Camera

We didn’t start off wanting to design a thermal camera. We would much rather use something off the shelf that works but we found that trail cameras missed so much of what is going on with NZ predators. Our goal with all our design is to design the ultimate product that does the job with digital technology and over time it will become less expensive as costs come down.

Thermal Camera vs Other Cameras

Other thermal cameras were not designed to be out in the bush monitoring animals. This video gives an idea of why we developed this camera as it show how much more it sees than a trail camera.

Camera Design Over Time

Current Design

Our current design has the following features

  • Can see about 3 times as many possums and cats and 10-20 times as many rats as a trail camera

  • Links with out online platform so you get automated reports about predator numbers (AI does the classification)

  • The previous version of the camera was over $3000 but new version is closer to a third of this cost with a tenth the power consumption

  • Can monitor indefinitely with solar power

Future Version

Future versions that we are currently testing will include

  • The ability to link to our trap so it can only trigger with it sees a target species

  • Will include a bird monitor so one device can do all your monitoring of both birds and predators.

Integrated Tools

Our thermal camera was designed to seamlessly integrate with our other projects and automate the hard work of collecting and managing conservation data.

Sidekick Mobile App

Configure the thermal camera using our mobile app for Android and iOS. Sidekick allows you to view a live image from the thermal camera, download stored videos and upload them to the Cacophony Monitoring Platform.

Cacophony Monitoring Platform

Upload the thermal camera videos by a wireless connection or via Sidekick, or mobile app. The videos are automated cataloged by our AI. No more managing data manually with SD cards or spreadsheets, our platform takes care of that for you.

Testimonials

I really appreciate the ongoing tech support and modifications you’re providing to our team. It is hugely valued and a great comfort when spending up large (for conservation budgets) on new tech tools.

— Matt Maitland, Senior Ranger Open Sanctuaries

We are all so excited about the possibilities and just wanted to share with you and your team to show how this is making a real-world difference to our conservation efforts here on Norfolk Island

— Allie Nance, NRM Ranger at the Norfolk Island National Park
